After voluntarily committing to the Maryland Public Services Commission “to allocate 25 percent of company spending with diverse suppliers”, Baltimore Gas and Electric Company surpassed that goal purchasing $250 million with diverse suppliers. The $257 million mark equates to 26% of the company’s total spend and is a 42% increase from 2015. Included in the diversity spend are companies owned by women, minorities and disabled veteran entrepreneurs.
The company’s impact is telling as in “January, the Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore released a study analyzing BGE’s economic impact on the state of Maryland. The company, one of the 25 largest private employers in Maryland with 3,200 employees, had an estimated economic impact of $5.1 billion of output, supported more than 9,500 jobs and produced more than $920 million in labor income in the company’s service area during 2015.”
BGE will continue it’s support of local businesses and is looking to grow the number of diversity spend in the coming years. Congratulations to BGE.
