President Trump is not your typical President. He’s not afraid to ask questions that most people wouldn’t consider to ask. For example renegotiating an outdated trade agreement like NAFTA could benefit the country immensely if done right. Other topics like the Civil War, probably shouldn’t be questioned as much.
In an interview with the Washington Examiner, President Trump stated “People don’t realize, you know, the Civil War, if you think about it, why? People don’t ask that question, but why was there the Civil War? Why could that one not have been worked out?” He furthers his questioning by promoting the benefits of Andrew Jackson. Apparently the President believes that if Andrew Jackson was President during the time of the Civil War, a war would not have been necessary.
“I mean, had Andrew Jackson been a little later you wouldn’t have had the Civil War,” he said. “He was a very tough person but he had a big heart. He was really angry that he saw with regard to the Civil War, he said ‘There’s no reason for this.”
As it has been pointed out all morning, President Jackson was a slave owner not known for his understanding of non-white plights (see Indian Removal Act). In addition, the President was also more than willing to invade states if they refused to support the Federal agenda as he did with South Carolina “if they did not abide by a protectionist tariff during the Nullification Crisis.”
It’s clear President Trump has only been told of the good points of Jackson’s Presidency who was known as a tough negotiator and bulldog. Like most of President Trump’s decisions, this is another result of a man who is looking more and more in over his head. But 90+% of his supporters still love him and in the end, this will just be another blip on the radar.
